Acute effects of gait interventions on tibial accelerations during treadmill running

چکیده
Introduction: Individuals who participate in high running volumes are at risk of sustaining tibial stress injuries. Increased acceleration during is a potential factor for developing Modified technique and/or equipment can potentially alter accelerations to reduce load and placed on the tibia. Numerous interventions (e.g. changes foot strike cadence; wearing minimalist shoes) modify loads have been assessed, however synthesis this evidence found inconclusive results. This study estimated effects footwear modifying running. Methods: Six naturally rearfoot striking recreational runners (age 28.5 ± 1.7; height 175.1 8.6; mass 67.9 7.6) ran an instrumented treadmill under seven conditions, those being: (i) preferred speed; (ii) speed +10%; (iii) +20%; (iv) induced forefoot strike; (v) shoes; (vi) with +10% (vii) -10% cadence. During each bout tri-axial accelerometer collected accelerations. Peak positive axial (PPA) peak resultant (PRA) were extracted from over 30 second period conditions. A repeated measures ANOVA was used compare condition both PPA PRA. Post-hoc comparisons made where main effect (p < 0.05) identified. Hedges g 95% confidence intervals also calculated pairwise differences. Results: identified = 0.02) PRA 0.02). Post hoc analyses no statistically significant differences between conditions when compared speed. Although significance extra-large cadence +10%, ( 1.843; 1.352, respectively) respectively). Running decreased by 2.08g 3.61g, while increased 2.22g 3.86g. Discussion: we effect, intervention However, 10% increase had largest descriptive reductions Reduced statistical power due small sample size likely led extra-large, non-statistically- effects. The seen these may help alleviate loading injury risk. Impact: or Conflict interest statement: authors acknowledge that conflict submission abstract

Changes in gait during constant pace treadmill running.
Treadmills are often used by runners when weather conditions are adverse or a specific training effect is desired. Athletes might respond to fatigue differently when running on a treadmill compared with overground conditions, where pace is typically more variable. The purpose of this study was to measure changes in gait parameters over the course of a 10-km treadmill run. Fifteen male competiti...
متن کاملValidation of a Kinematic Protocol for the Determination of Gait Events During Overground and Treadmill Running
Introduction The accurate division of the gait cycle into its component stance and swing phases is important in gait analysis. Use of force platforms to indicate when the foot is in contact with the ground is the 'gold standard' method of determining foot strike (FS) and toe off (TO). However force platforms may not be available, particularly during treadmill locomotion. Methods of determining ...
متن کاملThe effect of shoe insole stiffness on electromyography activity pattern of selected lower extremity muscles during running on treadmill
The purpose of this study was to determine the immediate effect of three types of shoe insoles, on electromyography activity of selected lower extremity muscles during running on treadmill. The electromyography activity of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius lateralis muscles of 14 male athletes were recorded in non-insole,...
متن کاملThe effects of treadmill running on aging laryngeal muscle structure.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Age-related changes in laryngeal muscle structure and function may contribute to deficits in voice and swallowing observed in elderly people. We hypothesized that treadmill running, an exercise that increases respiratory drive to upper airway muscles, would induce changes in thyroarytenoid muscle myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms that are consistent with a fast-to-slow tra...
متن کاملEMG activity during positive-pressure treadmill running.
Success has been demonstrated in rehabilitation from certain injuries while using positive-pressure treadmills. However, certain injuries progress even with the lighter vertical loads. Our purpose was to investigate changes in muscle activation for various lower limb muscles while running on a positive-pressure treadmill at different amounts of body weight support. We hypothesized that some mus...
